These keyboards typically allow users to input characters without the necessity of including tones, which may lead to a superficial understanding of tonal nuances. Furthermore, their predictive text features often prioritize frequently used words or complete phrases, potentially undermining the learner's ability to engage deeply with the language.

In contrast, ToneBoard presents an innovative solution by requiring users to input the correct tones alongside Pinyin spellings prior to displaying character options. This approach encourages learners to practice and reinforce their tonal recall during the typing process.

Operating similarly to the conventional simplified Chinese QWERTY keyboard on iOS, ToneBoard differentiates itself by emphasizing the importance of tone in character selection, thereby enhancing the user's overall proficiency in Mandarin Chinese.
